Dr. Justin Varney is currently the National Strategic Advisor on Health and Work at Public Health England in London. A naturally curious and innovative leader, Dr. Varney never backs down from an opportunity to overcome a challenge, guide another through a learning opportunity, or communicate his thoughts and ideas with others.

His passion in the above capacities has translated to a successful career in leading national engagement and programmes, developing award-winning public health initiatives and campaigns, and co-producing international plans for action like the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Action Plan on Physical Activity.

In addition to his pursuits within public health, Dr. Justin Varney has evolved into a catalytic public speaker known for improving outcomes and challenging group think. It is through this outlet that he shares his insights and opinions on a passion he finds deeply intriguing: futurology. By definition, futurology is the study of current trends in order to forecast future developments. Dr. Varney reflects on the implications of these trends for the public and private sector and ultimately for their impact on the health and wealth of nations across the world.

Dr. Varney is also a fervent advocate for the LGBT community. He has led a range of innovative initiatives to address health inequalities in this population, including developing the first ever reproductive health survey of trans people. Additionally, Dr. Varney created a multi-strand programme of work focused on addressing the needs of black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) gay men with the support of the MAC AIDS Foundation. Dr. Varney has been a special advisor on sexual orientation and gender identity to a range of regional and national organisations including London’s Metropolitan Police and Department of Health and Social Care in the UK.

Dr. Justin Varney has published peer review articles, book chapters and unique reports on the health inequalities many lesbians and gay men face, as well as their experiences of the nation’s healthcare system. His publications have been instrumental to shedding light on and starting open conversations about these issues, which are the first steps to sparking governmental and organisational change.

Prior to his specialisation in public health, Dr. Varney received his Bachelor of Medicine from St.  Bartholomew’s & The Royal London Hospitals Medical School at the University of London in 1999.
